For cyclists, the area around Eisenach offers a wide variety of scenic and picturesque cycle routes. Whether you wish to visit historical sights, cycle through idyllic villages or discover Thuringia’s natural beauty – there is a route to suit every taste.
Thuringian City Chain
The Thuringian City Chain connects seven of Thuringia’s most beautiful towns over a distance of 230 kilometres. The route is linked to Germany’s national long-distance cycle path network and connects the towns of Eisenach and Altenburg.
Hercules-Wartburg Cycle Path
The Hercules-Wartburg Cycle Path connects two major UNESCO World Heritage landmarks – the Hercules statue in Kassel and Wartburg Castle in Eisenach. Along the way, you’ll cross the former inner-German border by bike.
Nessetal Cycle Route
The best way to get from Eisenach to Erfurt, the state capital, is via the Nessetal Cycle Route. From Kindel Airfield, the former railway line leads through picturesque countryside, past small villages and colourful meadows, through Gotha and on to the ‘City of Flowers’, Erfurt.
Werratal Cycle Route
The Werratal Cycle Route is one of the most popular long-distance cycle routes in the region. It follows the River Werra for long stretches through rolling hills, forests and historic towns. You can easily access the route from Eisenach and enjoy leisurely rides with numerous rest areas, viewpoints and cultural attractions along the way.
